An early-14th-century keepless castle built on the doorstep of the O'Conor kings of Connacht, whose exact founder (Anglo-Norman baron Richard de Burgh or the Gaelic O'Conor clan) is still debated by historians. Captured by Cromwell's forces in 1652 and again seized by Williamite troops after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, it is the subject of an ongoing community archaeology field school.
